The Greater Vancouver Zoo is a 120-acre (49 ha) zoo located in Aldergrove, British Columbia, Canada.

Vancouver Game Farm: 1970‚Äď95

In the late 1960s, businessman Pat Hines purchased 120 acres (49¬†ha) in¬†Aldergrove, British Columbia¬†to construct a¬†game farm. At first, Hines registered the business as the¬†World Wide Game Farm Ltd., but on August 20, 1970, the site was opened to the public as the¬†Vancouver Game Farm. The first animal to arrive was a¬†llama¬†named “Dennis”, who came from¬†Mount Vernon, Washington. Soon after, animals of every size and description began to fill the newly constructed¬†paddocks. Hines operated the game farm with his wife, Ann, other family members, and their employees. Their daughter Eleanor and her husband, Hugh Oakes, eventually took over management of the facility until 1991, when it was sold.

Greater Vancouver Zoological Centre: 1995‚Äď99

Under new ownership, the game farm underwent many changes, including a new name. In 1995, it was renamed the Greater Vancouver Zoological Centre, since it is part of the Greater Vancouver area rather than being a part of Vancouver. Improvements included the construction of new animal enclosures, miniature train rides, a picnic park with covered gazebos and barbecues, expanded landscaping, a remodeled entrance, more parking spaces, interpretive and educational programs and activities. In 1998, the North American Wilds exhibit opened, providing a narrative safari bus ride for visitors through one area where carnivores like black bears, coyotes, and Vancouver Island wolves live together; and travel into another habitat where grazers like the Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, and North American plains bison roamed. But after four years, there were more changes.

Greater Vancouver Zoo: 1999‚Äďpresent

In 1999, the facility went through another ownership change and was eventually renamed the much simpler Greater Vancouver Zoo. During this period, the zoo (as with most other zoos and aquariums these days) focused more towards conservation and to building up its educational programs.

In 2000, the Greater Vancouver Zoo joined the¬†Oregon Spotted Frog¬†Recovery Program. At the time, the frog was the only species to receive an “emergency listing” as an endangered species in¬†Canada.[2]¬†The zoo is currently still involved with this program, releasing frogs into the wild after they are weighed, measured, and tagged. Furthermore, many animals have been rescued over the years and eventually released back into the wild, but some animals like “Shadow”, a¬†grizzly bear, could not be returned because she had been abandoned as a young cub and was not able to learn the skills needed to survive in the wild. In addition, the majority of the zoo’s reptiles, exotic birds, various¬†cat species, and many others were taken in for numerous reasons, such as being rescued from the¬†illegal pet trade¬†or after being abandoned as pets.

New educational programs were introduced by the zoo. In 2005, the “Radical Raptor Birds of Prey” show was created, in which¬†eagles,¬†owls,¬†hawks, and¬†falcons¬†performed free flying presentations at the zoo’s amphitheatre. Since then, the zoo has introduced a one-week¬†summer camp¬†program for children ages 10‚Äď14 to handle and learn about the many¬†birds of prey¬†species since 2007.[3]¬†In 2006, the zoo opened its indoor “Animalasium ‚Äď Educational Training Centre” to teach the public about conservation and education for animals and their¬†environments. In addition, the centre will also be used for various other functions, such as birthday parties, group sessions and guest speaker events.[4]¬†Furthermore, the zoo offers educational walking tours for school groups that is based on a¬†B.C. Ministry of Education curriculum.[5]

The new owners also completed building new enclosures for the grizzly bear, the Arctic wolf, the camels, the mountain sheep, and the hippopotamus, while making improvements to the giraffe enclosure. On August 23, 2008, the zoo introduced a pair of muskox to their new 32,000 sq ft (3,000 m2) enclosure, which with the Arctic wolf, Arctic fox, reindeer, and emperor, and snow goose enclosures,

The Vancouver Aquarium (officially the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre) is a public aquarium located in Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In addition to being a major tourist attraction for Vancouver, the aquarium is a centre for marine research, conservation and marine animal rehabilitation.

The Vancouver Aquarium was one of the first facilities to incorporate professional naturalists into the galleries to interpret animal behaviours.[6]¬†Prior to this, at the¬†London Zoo Fish House, naturalists¬†James S. Bowerbank,¬†Ray Lankester,¬†David W. Mitchell¬†and¬†Philip H. Gosse¬†(the creator of the word aquarium)[7]¬†had regularly held “open house” events, but the Vancouver Aquarium was the first to employ educational naturalists on a full-time basis. Aquarium research projects extend worldwide, and include¬†marine mammal¬†rescue and rehabilitation.

On August 9, 2010 Prime Minister Stephen Harper and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell announced capital funding of up to $15 million. The province would donate $10 million in funding over the next three years to help pay for a planned expansion of the 54-year-old facility, Premier Gordon Campbell said. Harper added that Ottawa would hand over up to $5 million to the aquarium for infrastructure upgrades.[8] The aquarium, however, remains a nonprofit organization. The property is owned by the City of Vancouver and rented to the Aquarium for $40,000 a year since 1991 (prior to which it was $1 per year).

In October 2009 the Vancouver Aquarium was designated as a Coastal America Learning Center by the US Environmental Protection Agency. As the first Learning Center in Canada, this designation is intended to strengthen the Canadian/U.S. partnership for protecting and restoring shared ocean resources.[9]

Aria Resort and Casino is a luxury resort and casino, part of the CityCenter complex on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Aria consists of two curved glass and steel highrise towers adjoined at the center. It opened on December 16, 2009 as a joint venture between MGM Resorts International and Infinity World Development. At 4,000,000 sq ft (370,000 m2) and 600 ft (180 m) in height, it is the largest and tallest structure at CityCenter.

The resort’s 61 and 51-story towers contain an¬†American Automobile Association¬†five diamond[3]¬†hotel with 4,004 guest rooms and suites, 16 restaurants, 10 bars and nightclubs, and a casino with 150,000¬†sq¬†ft (14,000¬†m2) of gaming space. It also has a 215,000¬†sq¬†ft (20,000¬†m2) pool area with 34 cabanas, an 80,000¬†sq¬†ft (7,400¬†m2) salon and¬†spa, a 300,000¬†sq¬†ft (28,000¬†m2) convention center and a 1,800-seat theater which hosted¬†Zarkana¬†by¬†Cirque du Soleil, until closing April 30, 2016.

Among the most notable aspects of Aria is its incorporation of technology in the exterior and interior design of the hotel,[4]¬†specifically for the reduction of energy consumption. It is the largest hotel in the world to have earned¬†LEED¬†Gold certification.[5]¬†On account of its smart rooms which automatically adjust curtains, turn off unused lights and electronics, and regulate the temperature when a guest enters or leaves a room, Aria was described in¬†Popular Mechanics¬†as possibly “the most technologically advanced hotel ever built”.[6]

Excalibur Hotel and Casino is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, in the United States. It is owned and operated by MGM Resorts International.

Excalibur, named for the mythical¬†sword¬†of¬†King Arthur, uses the¬†Medieval¬†theme in several ways. Its facade is a stylized image of a¬†castle. Until 2007, a wizard-like figure representing¬†Merlin¬†looked out from a high¬†turret¬†(since replaced by a figure advertising¬†Dick’s Last Resort).

Excalibur is situated at the Tropicana РLas Vegas Boulevard intersection. The hotel is linked by overhead pedestrian bridges to neighboring casinos to the north (New York-New York, across Tropicana Avenue) and to the east (Tropicana, across the Strip). A free tram connects Excalibur to its sister MGM Resorts International properties to the south, Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

History:

The land on which the Excalibur sits was originally the proposed site of the Xanadu Resort envisioned in 1975. The 1,730 room Asian-tropical themed resort would have been the first mega resort in Las Vegas. The project was never built when the developers could not secure a deal with the county on the sewer infrastructure such a large project would have required.[2]

Circus Circus Enterprises constructed Excalibur which opened on June 19, 1990, as the largest hotel in the world, with over 4,000 rooms, covering over 70 acres.[3][4] As of 2016 it is the seventh-largest hotel (by total number of rooms) in Las Vegas, and the eleventh-largest hotel worldwide.[5] MGM Resorts International purchased the property in 2005.

Excalibur was designed in line with the “theme resort” strategy popular among some casino operators during the 1990s, which included the traditional Las Vegas gaming experience coupled with family-oriented elements.[6]However, since 2006 most of the medieval themed statues and scenery have been removed as part of a four-year renovation and modernization project. As of 2010, few of the themed wall murals still remained as Excalibur was updated to include more modern and understated elements, including contemporary furniture and flat-screen plasma TVs in 2,000 renovated guest rooms.[7]

On March 21, 2003, Josh Ford of Los Angeles hit the largest Megabucks Jackpot to date of US$39.7 million at Excalibur.[8]

We found the rooms small and the lack of a bath tub was not a good thing, but the pool was nice.

Red Rock canyon is always nice but make sure you have sun screen and a lot of water.

LAS VEGAS May 2007

as Vegas¬†(/l…Ďňźs¬†ňąve…™…°…ôs/,¬†Spanish¬†for “The Meadows”), officially the¬†City of Las Vegas¬†and often known simply as¬†Vegas, is the¬†28th-most populated city¬†in the¬†United States, the most populated city in the¬†state¬†of¬†Nevada, and the¬†county seat¬†of¬†Clark County. The city anchors the¬†Las Vegas Valley¬†metropolitan area and is the largest city within the greater¬†Mojave Desert.[6]¬†Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major¬†resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife. The Las Vegas Valley as a whole serves as the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada.

The city bills itself as¬†The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its mega casino‚Äďhotels and associated activities. It is a top three destination in the United States for business conventions and a global leader in the¬†hospitality industry, claiming more¬†AAA Five Diamond¬†hotels than any other city in the world.[7][8][9]¬†Today, Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations.[10][11]¬†The city’s tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of¬†Sin City, and has made Las Vegas a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, and music videos.

Las Vegas was settled in 1905 and officially incorporated in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, it was the most populated American city founded within that century (a similar distinction earned by Chicago in the 1800s). Population growth has accelerated since the 1960s, and between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled, increasing by 85.2%. Rapid growth has continued into the 21st century, and according to a 2013 estimate, the population is 603,488 [12] with a regional population of 2,027,828.[4]

“Las Vegas” is often used to describe areas beyond official city limits‚ÄĒespecially the areas on and near the¬†Las Vegas Strip, which is actually located within the unincorporated communities of¬†Paradise,¬†Winchester, and¬†Enterprise.[13][14]

Las Vegas has a subtropical hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification: BWh), typical of the Mojave Desert in which it lies. This climate is typified by long, very hot summers; warm transitional seasons; and short, mild to chilly winters. There is abundant sunshine throughout the year, with an average of 310 sunny days and bright sunshine occurring during 86% of all daylight hours.[30] Rainfall is scarce, with an average of 4.2 in (110 mm) dispersed between roughly 26 to 27 total rainy days per year.[31] Las Vegas is among the sunniest, driest, and least humid locations in all of North America,[32] with exceptionally low dew points and humidity that sometimes remains below 10%.

The summer months of June through September are very hot, though moderated by extremely low humidity. July is the hottest month with an average daytime high of 104.2¬†¬įF (40.1¬†¬įC). On average, 134 days per year reach or exceed 90¬†¬įF (32¬†¬įC), of which 74 days reach 100¬†¬įF (38¬†¬įC) and 7 days reach 110¬†¬įF (43¬†¬įC). During the peak intensity of summer, overnight lows frequently remain above 80¬†¬įF (27¬†¬įC) and occasionally above 85¬†¬įF (29¬†¬įC).[30]While most summer days are consistently hot, dry, and cloudless, the¬†North American Monsoon¬†sporadically interrupts this pattern and brings more cloud cover, thunderstorms, lightning, increased humidity, and brief spells of heavy rain to the area. The window of opportunity for the monsoon to affect Las Vegas usually falls between July and August, although this is inconsistent and varies considerably in its impact from year to year.

Las Vegas winters are short and generally very mild, with chilly (but rarely cold) daytime temperatures. Like all seasons, sunshine during the winter is abundant. December is both the coolest and cloudiest month of the year, with an average daytime high of 56.6¬†¬įF (13.7¬†¬įC) and sunshine occurring during 78% of its daylight hours. Winter evenings are defined by clear skies and swift drops in temperature after sunset, with overnight lows sinking to 39¬†¬įF (3.9¬†¬įC) or lower during the majority of nights in December and January. Owing to its elevation that ranges from 2,000 feet to 3,000 feet, Las Vegas experiences markedly cooler winters than other areas of the¬†Mojave Desert¬†and the adjacent¬†Sonoran Desert¬†that are closer to sea level. Consequently, the city records freezing temperatures an average of 16 nights per winter. However, it is exceptionally rare for temperatures to ever fall to or below 25¬†¬įF (‚ąí4¬†¬įC), or for temperatures to remain below 45¬†¬įF (7¬†¬įC) for an entire day.[30]¬†Most of the annual precipitation falls during the winter months, but even the wettest month (February) averages only four days of measurable rain. The mountains immediately surrounding the Las Vegas Valley accumulate snow every winter, but significant or sustained accumulation of any kind within the city itself is rare. The most recent major event occurred on December 16, 2008, when Las Vegas received 3.6 inches (9.1¬†cm).[33]

The Venetian Las Vegas

The hotel uses¬†Venice,¬†Italy, as its design inspiration and features architectural replicas of various Venetian landmarks, including the¬†Palazzo Ducale,¬†Piazza San Marco,¬†Piazzetta di San Marco, the¬†Lion of Venice¬†Column and the Column of Saint Theodore,¬†St Mark’s Campanile, and the¬†Rialto Bridge. The design architects for this project were¬†The Stubbins Associates¬†and WAT&G. Interior design was provided by Wilson Associates, And Dougall Associates for the casino.[citation needed]

Hoover Dam, originally known as Boulder Dam from 1933 to 1947, when it was officially renamed Hoover Dam by a joint resolution of Congress, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was named after President Herbert Hoover.

Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.

Hoover Dam impounds¬†Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume (when it is full).[5]¬†The dam is located near¬†Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30¬†mi (48¬†km) southeast of¬†Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam’s generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. The heavily traveled¬†U.S. Route 93¬†(US¬†93) ran along the dam’s crest until October 2010, when the¬†Hoover Dam Bypass¬†opened.

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of water capacity. Formed by the Hoover Dam, the reservoir serves water to the states of Arizona, California, and Nevada, providing sustenance to nearly 20 million people and large areas of farmland.[1] Lake Mead is on the Colorado River, about 24 mi (39 km) from the Las Vegas Strip, southeast of the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the states of Nevada and Arizona.

At maximum capacity, Lake Mead is 112 miles (180 km) long, 532 feet (162 m) at its greatest depth, has a surface elevation of 1,221.4 feet (372.3 m) above sea level and 247 square miles (640 km2) of surface area, and contains 26.12 million acre feet (32.22 km3) of water.

The lake has not reached full capacity, however, since 1983 due to a combination of drought and increased water demand.[2][3][4] As of August 2017, Lake Mead was at approximately 40% of full capacity with 10 million acre-feet of held water.[5][6] It has been smaller than Lake Powell (the second largest US reservoir when both are full) since 2013.[7][8][9]

The lake was named after¬†Elwood Mead¬†(January 16, 1858 ‚Äď January 26, 1936) who was the commissioner of the¬†U.S. Bureau of Reclamation¬†from 1924 to 1936, during the planning and construction of the¬†Boulder Canyon Project¬†that created the¬†dam¬†and lake. Lake Mead was established as the Boulder Dam Recreation Area in 1936 administrated by the¬†National Park Service. The name was changed to the¬†Lake Mead National Recreation Area¬†in 1964, and¬†Lake Mohave¬†and the¬†Shivwits Plateau¬†were added to its jurisdiction. Both lakes and the surrounding area offer year-round recreation options.

The accumulated water from Hoover Dam¬†forced the evacuation¬†of several communities, most notably¬†St. Thomas, Nevada, whose last resident left the town in 1938.[10]¬†The ruins of St. Thomas are sometimes visible when the water level in Lake Mead drops below normal.[10]¬†Lake Mead also covered the sites of the Colorado River landings of¬†Callville¬†and¬†Rioville, Nevada, and the river crossing of¬†Bonelli’s Ferry, between Arizona and Nevada.

At lower water levels, a high-water mark or “bathtub ring” is visible in photos that show the shoreline of Lake Mead. The bathtub ring is white because of the deposition of minerals on previously submerged surfaces.[11]

We stayed at The Orleans is a hotel and casino located in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned and operated by Boyd Gaming. It includes the large multipurpose Orleans Arena that can be converted into an ice rink. It is a major home for poker in the Las Vegas Valley and was one of the biggest poker rooms in Las Vegas prior to the 21st century poker boom.[citation needed].

Though The Orleans attracts a fair number of tourists, it is primarily considered to be a locals casino. It is located about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) west of the Las Vegas Strip, but offers from 9:00 am to 12:30 am[1] a free shuttle bus approximately every 30 minutes to sister property Gold Coast Hotel and Casino and The Linq.

The Hotel and Casino opened in 1996. When the casino first opened, it did not perform up to expectations. In 1999 a major addition to the casino and other amenities were added. The success of these changes has been demonstrated by continued expansions in later years.

The Orleans Arena was added in 2003. A second hotel tower was added in 2004.

The location has the notoriety of having hosted the final concert performance from stand-up comedian George Carlin, in June 2008.

Puerto Vallarta¬†(Spanish pronunciation:¬†[ňąpwe…ĺto ő≤aňą éa…ĺta]) is a¬†Mexican¬†beach¬†resort city¬†situated on the Pacific Ocean’s¬†Bah√≠a de Banderas. The 2010 census reported Puerto Vallarta’s population as 255,725[1]¬†making it the fifth largest city in the¬†state¬†of¬†Jalisco, and the second largest¬†urban agglomeration¬†in the state after the¬†Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. The City of Puerto Vallarta is the government seat of the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta which comprises the city as well as population centers outside of the city extending from Boca de Tomatl√°n to the¬†Nayarit¬†border (the¬†Ameca River). The city is located at¬†20¬į40‚Ä≤N¬†105¬į16‚Ä≤W. The municipality has an area of 1,300.7 square kilometres (502.19¬†sq¬†mi). To the north it borders the southwest part of the state of¬†Nayarit. To the east it borders the municipality of Mascota and¬†San Sebasti√°n del Oeste, and to the south it borders the municipalities of Talpa de Allende and Cabo Corriente.[2]

Puerto Vallarta is named after¬†Ignacio Vallarta, a former¬†governor of Jalisco. In¬†Spanish,¬†Puerto Vallarta¬†is frequently shortened to “Vallarta”, while English speakers call the city¬†P.V.¬†for short. In internet shorthand the city is often referred to as PVR, after the¬†International Air Transport Association airport code¬†for its¬†Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport.

Cassi Ridder Puerto Vallarta’s proximity to the Bay of Banderas, the agricultural valley of the¬†Ameca River, and the important mining centers in the Sierra have given the town a more interesting past than most Mexican tourist destinations. Puerto Vallarta was a thriving Mexican village long before it became an international tourist destination. Tourism was a major economic activity because of the climate, scenery, tropical beaches, and rich cultural history.

Few details are known about the history of the area prior to the 19th century. There is archaeological evidence to suggest continuous human habitation from 580 BC, and similar evidence (from sites near Ixtapa and in Col. L√°zaro Cardenas)[3]¬†that the area belonged to the Aztatl√°n culture which dominated¬†Jalisco,¬†Nayarit¬†and¬†Michoac√°n¬†from¬†c.‚ÄČ900‚Äď1200. The limited evidence in occidental Mexican archeology have limited the current knowledge about pre-historic life in the area.[4]

Spanish missionary and conquistador documents chronicle skirmishes between the Spanish colonizers and the local peoples. In 1524, for example, a large battle between Hernán Cortés and an army of 10,000 to 20,000 Indians resulted in Cortés taking control of much of the Ameca valley. The valley was then named Banderas (flags) after the colorful standards carried by the natives.

Also the area appears on maps and in sailing logs as a bay of refuge for the Manila Galleon trade as well as for other coastal seafarers. As such it figures in some accounts of pirate operations and smuggling and pirate contravention efforts by the viceregal government. During the 17th and 18th centuries the Banderas Valley and its beaches along the Bay of Banderas served as supply points for ships seeking refuge in the bay. The area also served as a point where smuggled goods could be sent on to the Sierra towns near Mascota, evading the customs operations at San Blas, Nayarit.

During the 19th century the history of Puerto Vallarta, then called El Carrizal or Las Pe√Īas, was linked to the history of the Sierra towns of¬†San Sebastian del Oeste, Talpa de Allende and Mascota. While today these towns are considered quaint tourist destinations, during much of the 18th century, Mascota was Jalisco’s second largest town, after Guadalajara. Mascota and its neighboring towns located in the high plateaus of the Sierra, developed as agricultural towns to support the growing mining operations in the Sierra.

During the 18th century, as Mascota grew, Puerto Vallarta grew with it, transforming itself from a small fishing and pearl-diving village into a small beach-landing port serving the Sierra towns. At the time the main port serving Jalisco was located at San Blas, but the inconvenient overland route from San Blas to the Sierra towns made Puerto Vallarta a more convenient alternative for smaller shipments, not to mention smuggling operations which evaded the tax collectors at San Blas. Puerto Vallarta also became a vacation destination for residents of the Sierra Towns, and by the mid 19th century, the town already had its regularly returning population of vacationers. Most of the early settlers in Puerto Vallarta were families who had left the Sierra towns for one reason or another.

1859 saw an important turning point for the small village, then known as Las Pe√Īas. That year the Union en Cuale mining company took possession of land extending from Los Arcos to the Pitillal river and extending back up into the Sierra for kilometres. The Union en Cuale company was owned in part by the Camarena brothers of Guadalajara who had developed a small trade in oil palm in Las Pe√Īas. The purpose of the government’s sale of the land to the company was to provide for shipping, fishing and agricultural support for the mining operations which were growing quite quickly in the Sierra.

The official founding story of Las Pe√Īas and thus of Puerto Vallarta is that it was founded by Guadalupe S√°nchez Torres, on December 12, 1851, as Las Pe√Īas de Santa Mar√≠a de Guadalupe. Unfortunately the record of Sr. Sanchez’s purchase of property in Las Pe√Īas dates the sale to 1859.[5]¬†Also even as early as 1850 the area was already peopled by fishermen, pearl divers, smugglers and foragers, all of whom had something of a permanent existence in the area. Given the existing historical documents it is simply impossible to date the first permanent settlement in the area,

There is however no doubt the development of Las Pe√Īas into a self-sustaining village of any significant size happened in the 1860s as the mouth of the Cuale area was exploited to support the operations of the newly enfranchised Union en Cuale company. As such 1859 marks the beginning of Puerto Vallarta as a village. Twenty years later, by 1885, the village comprised about 250 homes and about 800 residents.[6]

With growth comes problems. During the early 1980s Puerto Vallarta experienced a marked increase in problems related to poverty. While the devaluation of the peso brought record numbers of tourists to the area, it also stifled investment and thus construction. So while more and more workers were arriving in Puerto Vallarta to try to cash in on the booming tourist trade, less and less was being done to accommodate them with housing and related infrastructure.

So during the mid-1980s Puerto Vallarta experienced a rapid expansion of impromptu communities poorly served by even basic public services. This very low standard of living leveled out Puerto Vallarta’s resort boom. In the late 1980s Puerto Vallarta government worked to alleviate the situation by developing housing and infrastructure. However, the legacy of the 1980s boom remains even today where the outlying areas of Puerto Vallarta suffer from poor provision of basic services (i.e. water, sewage, roads).[9]

In 1993, the federal Agrarian Law was amended allowing for more secure foreign tenure of former¬†ejido¬†land. Those controlling¬†ejido¬†land were allowed to petition for regularization, a process that converted their controlling interest into fee simple ownership. This meant that the property could be sold, and it led to a boom in the development of private residences, mostly condominiums, and a new phase of Puerto Vallarta’s expansion began, centered more on accommodating retirees,¬†snowbirds, and those who visited the city enough to make purchasing a condominium or a time-share a cost-effective option.

Puerto Vallarta’s climate is typical¬†Tropical wet and dry¬†(K√∂ppen climate classification¬†Aw).[10]¬†The average daily high temperature is 86¬†¬įF (30¬†¬įC); average daily low temperature is 70¬†¬įF (21¬†¬įC); average daily humidity is 75%. The rainy season extends from mid June through mid October, with most of the rain between July and September. August is the city’s wettest month, with an average of 14 days with significant precipitation. Even during the rainy season precipitation tends to be concentrated in large rainstorms. Occasional tropical storms will bring thunderstorms to the city in November, though the month is typically dry. There is a marked dry season in the winter. February, March and April are the months with the least cloud cover.[11]

Prevailing winds are from the southwest, and most weather systems approaching Puerto Vallarta are consequently weakened as they pass over Cabo Corriente. Thus even during the rainy season Puerto Vallarta’s weather tends to be mild compared to other areas along the Mexican Pacific coast.

Hurricanes seldom strike Puerto Vallarta. In 2002, Hurricane Kenna, a category 5 hurricane, made landfall about 160 km (100 mi) northwest of Puerto Vallarta, and the city suffered some damage from the resulting storm surge. In 1971, Hurricane Lily, a category 1 hurricane, caused serious flooding on the Isla Cuale, prompting the city to relocate all of its residents to the new Colonia Palo Seco.

Puerto Vallarta lies on a narrow coastal plain at the foot of the Sierras Cuale and San Sebastián, parts of the Sierra Madre Occidental. The plain widens to the north, reaching its widest point along the Ameca river. Three rivers flow from the Sierra through the area. From south to north they are the Cuale, the Pitillal, and the Ameca. A number of arroyos also run from the Sierra to the coastal plain. Many of the valleys of these rivers and arroyos are inhabited. Also development has to some extent spread up the hillsides from the coastal plain.

The city proper comprises four main areas: the hotel zone along the shore to the north, Olas Altas РCol Zapata to the south of the Cuale river (recently named Zona Romantica in some tourist brochures), the Centro along the shore between these two areas, and a number of residential areas to the east of the hotel zone. The oldest section of the town is the area of Col. Centro near the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, especially Hidalgo street.

Visibility in the water off Puerto Vallarta, close to the mouths of the rivers is poor in the summer, but away from these locations visibility in the summer is greater than in the dry season. In Puerto Vallarta, the sewage is treated by a British/Dutch company with a “State of the Art” facility. Outside of the City there may be no connection to this and in the rainy season some pollution can happen around the river mouths, but it quickly dissipates in the bay, which is a huge body of water.

Recently, jellyfish blooms in the fall have become an increasing problem, making many of the area beaches unsuitable for swimming. It is likely that the blooms are the result of increased algae levels and decreases in predator populations due to the ever declining quality of the water in the bay. While the city government has done a lot to improve sewage treatment, it has done little to enforce its usage, and the worsening jellyfish bloom is probably a consequence of the resulting plankton blooms.[26]

Recently (as of 2006) beaches in Jalisco were ranked as the worst in the country in a government study. The beaches at Boca de Tomatlan and at the mouth of the Cuale in the heart of Puerto Vallarta tested repeatedly at rates three to four times internationally accepted standards for human fecal bacteria.[27] Even the beaches at seemingly idyllic Yelapa and Mismaloya tested at the same high levels on several occasions. During the rainy months of June and July the situation becomes worse. For example, in July 2007, Los Muertos beach tested at 12 times the limit that the US EPA considers safe for swimming.[28]

Landmarks in Puerto Vallarta

Playa Conchas Chinas

  • Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe¬†– Col. Centro
  • P√ļlpito and Pilitas (Pulpit and Baptismal Font) – Col. Emilio Zapata – two rock formations at the South end of Los Muertos Beach.¬†El P√ļlpito¬†is the tall headland and¬†Las Pilitas¬†are the formation of rocks beneath it.¬†Las Pilitas¬†was the original location of the Boy on a Seahorse sculpture (El Caballito) now located on the¬†Malec√≥n, an identical sculpture is also located on Los Muertos Beach. There are two streets in the Olas Altas area named after the rock formations.
  • Playa Conchas Chinas (Curly Shells Beach) – Fracc. Amapas – the city’s most secluded beach, located to the south of the headland which forms the boundary of Los Muertos beach.
  • The Malec√≥n¬†– paved walkway along the seashore in Col. Centro – especially popular during the Sunday evening¬†paseo. It features a collection of contemporary sculptures by¬†Sergio Bustamante,¬†Alejandro Colunga, Ramiz Barquet and others. The Malecon was extensively rebuilt in 2002-2003 following damage from hurricane Kenna. It was also greatly renovated, having new walkways and iconic sculptures in 2010
  • Mercado Isle Cuale and Mercado Municipal Cuale – there are two large public markets in the Centro along the banks of the Cuale selling a variety of artisanal and souvenir goods, and the Isla Cuale has a number of souvenir vendor shops as well. The Isla Cuale was also famous for its cat population. The Island was a lower class suburb until flooding during Hurricane Lily (1971) forced residents to be relocated. They were moved to Palo Seco (which means “dry stick”) and the Island was converted into a site for restaurants, shops and a cultural center.
  • Cuale Archaeological Museum – on the West side of the¬†Isla Cuale, the museum presents a significant collection of local and regional pre-Hispanic art in a number of informative displays. The museum also houses a small gallery for showing contemporary art.
  • John Huston statue on¬†Isla Cuale¬†– dedicated on the 25th anniversary of the film’s release and honoring Huston’s contributions to the city. John’s son Danny was married in a ceremony that took place at the statue in 2002.
  • Plaza de Armas¬†(Ignacio Vallarta) / Aquiles Serdan Amphitheater (Los Arcos) – the city’s main plaza – site of public concerts both at the bandstand in the Plaza de Armas and on the stage in front of the arches across the street.
  • City Hall – a modern city hall laid out using a traditional courtyard plan. There is a tourist office in the SW corner, and on the landing of the main (West off the courtyard) stairwell there is a modest naive style mural by local artist Manuel Lepe.
  • Saucedo Theatre Building (Juarez at Iturbide) – Built in 1922 in a Belle Epoque style reminiscent of architecture of the Porfirato. The theater presented live shows and films on its first floor, and the second floor housed a ballroom. The building has been converted to retail use.

Landmarks south of Puerto Vallarta

  • Los Arcos Marine Natural Area – offshore of Mismaloya 12¬†km south of Puerto Vallarta. The area has been a National Marine Park since 1984. The area is protected as a breeding ground for pelicans, boobies and other sea birds. The park is a popular snorkeling destination both for the rocks themselves and for the fossilized coral beds that surround them.
  • Vallarta Botanical Gardens[40]¬†– A popular showcase of orchids, agaves, cactus, palms, and other native plants. A restaurant and river swimming is also available to visitors. The gardens are located 14¬†mi (23¬†km) South of Puerto Vallarta on Highway 200. Buses for the Vallarta Botanical Gardens depart from the corner of Carranzas and Aguacate Streets in the Zona Romantica and are labeled as both “El Tuito” and “Botanical Gardens”.
  • Puerto Vallarta Zoo[41]¬†– with 350 animals, and located in a forested setting in Mismaloya.

Landmarks north of Puerto Vallarta

  • University of Guadalajara’s Coastal Center – North of Pitillal and West of Ixtapa, the campus features several public attractions including the Peter Gray Art Museum and a Crocodile Farm.
  • Ixtapa Archaeological Zone – north of the town of Ixtapa along the banks of the Ameca River there is an archeological site with remains going back several thousand years. The site comprises 29 mounds. The largest measures 40 meters in diameter and 8 meters in height. The site also includes the remains of ceremonial ball court. The original inhabitants of the site were vassals of the Aztatl√°n kingdom which was located in Western Jalisco between 900 and 1200 AD. The site is the oldest explored in Western Jalisco. The digs have uncovered a number of residential and ceremonial sites, a wealth of pottery (incense burners, bowls, amphora, etc.). Many of these objects are on display at the Rio Cuale Island Museum.

Landmarks east of Puerto Vallarta

  • Terra Noble Art and Healing Center – a¬†New Age¬†spa,¬†meditation¬†center and artist retreat on the hills east of Puerto Vallarta along the edge of the¬†Agua Azul Nature Reserve¬†overlooking Bah√≠a de Banderas. The complex, built to resemble an early Mexican¬†wattle and daub¬†home was created by architect Jorge Rubio in conjunction with American sculptor Suzy Odom.[42][43]

Beaches and beach towns

Beaches in Puerto Vallarta

  • Playa Camarones (Shrimp Beach) – Col. 5 de Deciembre (vicinity of Av. Paragua – Hotel Buenaventura. This is the northernmost public beach in the City of Puerto Vallarta proper. It is named after the shrimp fishermen that once landed their launches on the beach to unload their catch.[44]
  • Playa Olas Altas (High Waves Beach) – Col. Emilio Zapata – the beach extends from the Cuale River South to the fishing pier. In spite of the name, the waves offshore are not particularly high, and the beach is a popular place to swim, especially for locals and national tourists. The beach is lined with outdoor restaurants.[45]
  • Playa Los Muertos (Beach of the Dead) – Col. Emilio Zapata – the city’s largest public beach. Legend has it the beach’s name (Dead Men’s Beach) stems from a battle between pirates and local miners after which bodies remained strewn on the beach, but it’s a legend, since there were never any miners in Vallarta. The South Side of the beach is a popular gathering spot for gay and lesbian tourists. The North end is frequented mostly by locals, and national tourists. The city has recently tried to change the name of the beach to Playa del Sol.[45]
  • Playa Boca de Tomates (Mouth of Tomatoes) – a beach located near the mouth of the Ameca River. The beach is not very popular among international tourists due to the rocks that come ashore especially in the summertime. Also watch out for crocodiles. Its proximity to the Ameca River which carries muddy rainwater in the summertime causes the water to lose its clarity making it appear dirty.

Beaches South of Puerto Vallarta

  • Playa Gemelas ‚Äď a beach 3¬†km (2¬†mi) north of the mouth of the Mismaloya river and has some of the clearest water in the bay.
  • Playa Mismaloya ‚Äď at the mouth of the Mismaloya River. The beach was featured in several scenes from¬†Night of the Iguana¬†and the main set was located on hillside to the south of the beach. The beach is developed with a number of restaurants.
South Shores beaches

A number of beaches along the South shore of the bay are accessible only by boat (from Boca de Tomatl√°n or the Los Muertos Pier). The developed beaches include (east to west): Las Animas, Quimixto, Majahuitas and Yelapa. These and other smaller undeveloped beaches can be reached by launch from Boca de Tomatl√°n.

  • Playa Las Animas – a narrow wide white sand beach developed with several restaurants.
  • Playa Las Caletas – a secluded beach that was once the private retreat of film director John Huston. Today it is a wildlife preserve. There is a living natural reef close to shore which makes the beach a popular destination for snorkelers.[46]
  • Playa Quimixto – a somewhat rocky and secluded beach which is settled by a small village of a several hundred families. There are horse and guide hire concessions in the town which lead visitors through a small canyon behind the town to a series of waterfalls.[47]
  • Yelapa – once a small electricity free fishing village and a popular “hideaway” for gringos, now it has electricity, telephones and the internet. Visited by tourist boats for about 3 hours a day, it reverts to its laid back ways when they leave.

Beaches north of Puerto Vallarta

The north shore of the bay is lined with beach towns that offer good wading beaches and the usual tourist amenities. These include (east to west): Bucerias, Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Playa la Manzanilla, Playa Destiladeras, Playa Pontoque, and Punta Mita, all in the State of Nayarit. All can be reached by bus (departing from Wal-Mart).

Jasper Sept 2007

Jasper is a specialized municipality in western Alberta, Canada. It is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park, located in the Canadian Rockies within the Athabasca River valley. Jasper is approximately 362 kilometres (225 mi) west of Edmonton and 290 kilometres (180 mi) north of Banff, Alberta, at the intersection of Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway) and Highway 93 (Icefields Parkway).

The Municipality of Jasper, comprising the Jasper townsite known as the Town of Jasper[5] and a surrounding rural service area,[6] was established as a specialized municipality on July 20, 2001.[5] Governance is shared between the municipality and the federal Parks Canada agency.[7]

Cassi Ridder

Established in 1813, Jasper House was first a¬†North West Company, and later¬†Hudson’s Bay Company,¬†fur trade¬†outpost on the¬†York Factory Express¬†trade route to what was then called “New Caledonia” (now¬†British Columbia), and¬†Fort Vancouver¬†in¬†Columbia District¬†on the lower¬†Columbia River.[8]

Jasper National Park was established in 1907. The¬†railway siding¬†at the location of the future townsite was established by¬†Grand Trunk Pacific Railway¬†in 1911 and originally named Fitzhugh after a Grand Trunk vice president[9]¬†(along the¬†Grand Trunk’s “alphabet” line). The¬†Canadian Northern Railway¬†began service to Fitzhugh in 1912.[10]¬†The townsite was surveyed in 1913 by H. Matheson.[10]¬†It was renamed Jasper after the former fur trade post. An¬†internment camp¬†was set up at Dominion Park in Jasper from February 1916 to August 1916.[11]

By 1931, Jasper was accessible by road from Edmonton, and in 1940 the scenic Icefields Parkway opened, connecting Lake Louise and Jasper.

Jasper is located in the Athabasca River valley, at the confluence with Miette River. It lies between the Victoria Cross Ranges (northwest), Pyramid Mountain (north), Maligne Range(southeast) and Indian Ridge (southwest).

Jasper is connected to the west via the Yellowhead Highway and the Yellowhead Pass to Prince George and to the east to Edmonton. Toward the south, the Icefields Parkway leads to Banff and Banff National Park.

Located near Jasper are¬†Pyramid Lake¬†and¬†Patricia Lake, as well as Lake Annette, Lake Edith,¬†Lac Beauvert,¬†Maligne Lake,¬†Medicine Lake¬†and other smaller lakes. The¬†Jasper Skytram, which takes visitors to The Whistlers’ summit, and the¬†Marmot Basin¬†ski resort are located near the town, as is the Fairmont¬†Jasper Park Lodge. The Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives is located in the Jasper town site, as is the¬†Jasper Visitor Centre.

Jasper experiences a borderline¬†Humid Continental/Subarctic¬†climate (K√∂ppen climate classification¬†Dfb/Dfc). The highest temperature ever recorded in Jasper was 36.7¬†¬įC (98¬†¬įF) on 16 July 1941.[12]¬†The coldest temperature ever recorded was ‚ąí47.2¬†¬įC (‚ąí53¬†¬įF) on 24 January 1916.[13]

Jasper railway station¬†is served by¬†Via Rail¬†with two passenger services.¬†The Canadian¬†and the¬†Jasper ‚Äď Prince Rupert train¬†both operate three times per week.[21]

Jasper Airport is located 7.2 nautical miles (13.3 km; 8.3 mi) north of Jasper.

Jasper was named after Jasper Hawes, who operated a trading post in the region for the North West Company. Before this it was referred to as Fitzhugh. The park was established on September 14, 1907 as Jasper Forest Park, and was granted national park status in 1930, with the passing of the National Parks Act.[2] In 2014, Jasper National Park had 2,154,710 visitors.[1] Mammalian species found in the park are the elk, caribou ( also known as Reindeer,) moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, porcupine, lynx, beaver, two species of fox, marten, pika, grizzly bear, coyote, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, black bear, timber wolf, hoary marmot, cougar, and wolverine. The most common birds that fly around this park including raptors are bald eagles, golden eagles, Great horned owls, spruce grouses, white-tailed ptarmigans, bohemian waxwings, and evening grosbeaks. Canada geese and red-necked grebes mostly float on Maligne Lake.

Some of the park’s scenic attractions include¬†Mount Edith Cavell, Pyramid Lake with¬†Pyramid Mountain,¬†Maligne Lake,¬†Medicine Lake, and the¬†Tonquin Valley. Other attractions are the¬†Marmot Basin¬†ski area; the¬†Snocoach¬†tours of the¬†Athabasca Glacier, an outlet glacier of the¬†Columbia Icefield;¬†Athabasca Falls; the¬†Jasper Skytram, and numerous other outdoor related recreational activities (such as¬†hiking,¬†fishing, wildlife viewing,¬†rafting,¬†kayaking¬†and camping). The¬†Miette Hot Springs¬†are located close to the northeast entrance. The Miette Hot Springs are created by an extremely hot spring cooled by the mountain to temperatures suitable for humans.

The Icefields Parkway is a highway 230 km (140 mi) in length from Lake Louise, Alberta in Banff National Park, to Jasper, Alberta. The highway parallels the continental divide, providing motor and cycle access to the mountains. The Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls are both accessible by the road.

Banff Alberta Canada Sept 2007

The Town of Banff was the first municipality to incorporate within a Canadian national park.

Banff is a¬†resort town¬†and one of Canada’s most popular¬†tourist destinations. Known for its mountainous surroundings and¬†hot springs,

it is a destination for outdoor sports and features extensive hiking, biking, scramblingand skiing destinations within the area.

Sunshine Village, Ski Norquay and Lake Louise Mountain Resort are the three nearby ski resorts located within the national park.

Banff was first settled in the 1880s, after the transcontinental railway was built through the Bow Valley. In 1883, three¬†Canadian Pacific Railway¬†workers stumbled upon a series of natural hot springs on the side of¬†Sulphur Mountain. In 1885, Canada established a federal reserve of 26¬†km2¬†(10¬†sq¬†mi) around the¬†Cave and Basin¬†hot springs, and began promoting the area as an international resort and spa as a way to support the new railway.[5]¬†In 1887, the reserve area was increased to 673¬†km2¬†(260¬†sq¬†mi) and named “Rocky Mountain Park”. This was the beginning of Canada’s National Park system.

The area was named Banff in 1884 by George Stephen, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, recalling his birthplace in Banff, Scotland. The Canadian Pacific built a series of grand hotels along the rail line and advertised the Banff Springs Hotel as an international tourist resort.

The Banff town site was developed near the railway station as a service centre for tourists visiting the park. It was administered by the Government of Canada’s national parks

system until 1990 when the Town of Banff became the only incorporated  municipality within a Canadian national park.

An Internment camp was set up at Banff and Castle Mountain in Dominion Park from July 1915 to July 1917.[6]

In 1985, the United Nations declared Banff National Park, as one of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, a

World Heritage Site. Banff remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Canada.

One of the most notable figures of Banff was¬†Norman Luxton, who was known as “Mr. Banff”. He published the¬†Crag and Canyon newspaper,

built the King Edward Hotel and the Lux Theatre, and founded the Sign of the Goat

Curio Shop, which led to the development of the Luxton Museum of Plains Indians, now the Buffalo Nations Museum.[7] He and his family helped organize the Banff Indian Days and the Banff Winter Carnival.

In 1976, the¬†International Astronomical Union‘s Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (IAU/WGPSN) officially adopted the name Banff for a crater on Mars, after the town in Alberta. The crater is at latitude 17.7¬į north and longitude 30.8¬į west. Its diameter is 5¬†km (3.1¬†mi).[8] ¬† ¬†Banff experiences a¬†subarctic climate¬†(K√∂ppen climate classification¬†Dfc) that borders on a¬†humid continental climate¬†(K√∂ppen¬†Dfb).

Winter temperatures range from an average low of ‚ąí13.3¬†¬įC (8.1¬†¬įF) to an average high of ‚ąí0.2¬†¬įC (31.6¬†¬įF). Summer temperatures in the warmest month are pleasant with an average high of 21.6¬įC (70.9¬†¬įF) and an average low of 7.3¬†¬įC (45.1¬†¬įF). Snow has been recorded in all months of the year. The annual snowfall averages 191.0¬†cm (75.2¬†in).[10]

Attractions

There are a number of popular mountains located immediately adjacent to the townsite which include¬†Mount Rundle¬†(2,949¬†m or 9,675¬†ft);¬†Cascade Mountain¬†(2,998¬†m or 9,836¬†ft); and¬†Mount Norquay¬†(2,134¬†m or 7,001¬†ft). Mount Norquay has a ski slope as well as¬†mountain biking¬†trails on the¬†Stoney Squaw¬†portion. A popular tourist attraction, the Banff Gondola, is available to ascend¬†Sulphur Mountain¬†(2,281¬†m or 7,484¬†ft) where a boardwalk (Banff Skywalk) beginning from the upper terminal takes visitors to Sanson Peak. Sulphur Mountain is also the location of one of Banff’s most popular attractions, the¬†Banff Upper Hot Springs.

Lake Minnewanka located six minutes north of the townsite is a very popular day use area with a variety of activities. Mountain biking, hiking and fishing are all activities allowed in this part of the park. A very popular Lake Cruise, motor boat rentals and a small food concession are available at the marina.

Tunnel Mountain (formerly known as Sleeping Buffalo Mountain) (1,690 m or 5,545 ft) is situated within the townsite and is very popular for quick hikes; one can reach the summit in less than half an hour. It was named Tunnel Mountain because surveyors initially wanted to make a tunnel for the Canadian Pacific Railway right through the mountain, instead of following the Bow River Valley.

Banff is home to the well-known Banff World Television Festival, Banff Mountain Film Festival, Rocky Mountain Music Festival and Bike Fest. The city is also the starting point of the 4,417 km (2,745 mi) Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, which terminates at Antelope Wells, New Mexico in the United States.

Vancouver Island 2006

Vancouver Island British Columbia:

Vancouver Island is in the northeastern Pacific Ocean, just off the coast of Canada. It is part of the Canadian province of British Columbia. The island is 460 kilometres (290 mi) in length, 100 kilometres (62 mi) in width at its widest point,[5] and 32,134 km2 (12,407 sq mi) in area. It is the largest island on the West Coast of North America.

The southern part of Vancouver Island is the only part of British Columbia or Western Canada to lie south of the 49th Parallel, along with most of the southern Gulf Islands and minor offshore islands. This area has one of the warmest climates in Canada, and since the mid-1990s has been mild enough in a few areas to grow subtropical Mediterranean crops such as olives and lemons.[6]

Vancouver Island has a population of 759,366 according to the¬†Canada 2011 Census.[7]¬†Nearly half of that figure (344,630) live in the¬†metropolitan area¬†of¬†Greater Victoria. Other notable cities and towns on Vancouver Island include¬†Nanaimo,¬†Port Alberni,¬†Parksville,¬†Courtenay, and¬†Campbell River.¬†Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, is located on the island, but the larger city of¬†Vancouver¬†is not ‚Äď it is on the¬†North American¬†mainland, across the¬†Strait of Georgia¬†from Nanaimo.

Vancouver Island has been the homeland to many¬†indigenous peoples¬†for thousands of years.[8]¬†The island was explored by British and Spanish expeditions in the late 18th century. It was named¬†Quadra’s and Vancouver’s Island¬†in commemoration of the friendly negotiations held in 1792 by Spanish commander of the¬†Nootka Sound settlement,¬†Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, and by British naval captain¬†George Vancouver, during the¬†Nootka Crisis. Quadra’s name was eventually dropped from the name. It is one of several¬†North American¬†locations named after George Vancouver, who explored the¬†Pacific Northwest¬†coast between 1791 and 1794.

Vancouver Island is the¬†world’s 43rd largest island,¬†Canada’s 11th largest island, and¬†Canada’s second most populous island¬†after the¬†Island of Montreal. It is the largest¬†Pacific island¬†anywhere east of¬†New Zealand.[nb 1]

Newcastle Island is a provincial park located on a small island off the coast of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.

Newcastle Island has had quite a journey from a seasonal fishing site for the¬†Coast Salish¬†to the beautiful marine park it is today. Each year the Natives would practically pick up their houses and move on, leading the¬†Spanish¬†and¬†Hudson’s Bay Company¬†explorers to believe the island was uninhabited. The¬†herring¬†that attracted the Coast Salish were an industry of their own. Several Oriental herring¬†salteries¬†and¬†fisheries¬†were built on the Northwestern coast of the island. A migrating¬†Snuneymuxw¬†pointed out the existence of¬†coal¬†on the island, which produced the industry that would provide work for Nanaimoites for years to come. During the mining for coal, the island’s¬†sandstone¬†was found to be exceptional and was sought after for years by different cities, and even different countries. Many different companies from all over fought for leases to cut the Newcastle Island stone. Also wanting the durable stone was an industry entirely different from architecture. It was pulp-stones that were needed up and down the coast to grind up tree fibres into¬†pulp¬†for papermaking and Newcastle sandstone proved to be one of the best. Even with all those different uses of the land, the¬†Canadian Pacific Railway¬†saw the beauty within and bought the island to create their own little island resort. It was then sold, after a decrease in popularity, to the City of¬†Nanaimo¬†who got so far into debt that they sold it to the¬†BC Government, who turned it into a marine park. After years of success as a marine park, we get the lovely, picturesque island that we enjoy today.

Las Vegas 2005

Las Vegas 2005:

Star Trek: The Experience was a themed attraction which opened in January 1998 at the Las Vegas Hilton in Paradise, Nevada, United States, based on the Star Trek entertainment franchise. The pavilion underwent one major renovation in 2004 which added the Borg Invasion 4-D attraction, which used state-of-the-art amusement technology where guests experienced an encounter with the Borg. Star Trek: The Experience was operated by entertainment management company Cedar Fair Entertainment Company after its June 2006 purchase of Paramount Parks from the CBS Corporation.[1] It closed in September 2008, and was scheduled to reopen in the Neonopolis Mall on May 8, 2009 in time for the premiere of the Star Trek film. It was then pushed back to 2010, and then in 2011 it was announced that they had lost the license.[2]

Jasper was named after Jasper Hawes, who operated a trading post in the region for the North West Company. Before this it was referred to as Fitzhugh. The park was established on September 14, 1907 as Jasper Forest Park, and was granted national park status in 1930, with the passing of the National Parks Act.[2] In 2014, Jasper National Park had 2,154,710 visitors.[1]

Wildlife

Mammalian species found in the park are the elk, caribou ( also known as Reindeer,) moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, porcupine, lynx, beaver, two species of fox, marten, pika, grizzly bear, coyote, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, black bear, timber wolf, hoary marmot, cougar, and wolverine. The most common birds that fly around this park including raptors are bald eagles, golden eagles, Great horned owls, spruce grouses, white-tailed ptarmigans, bohemian waxwings, and evening grosbeaks. Canada geese and red-necked grebes mostly float on Maligne Lake.

World Heritage Site

The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, together with the other national and provincial parks that form the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, for the mountain landscapes containing mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons, and limestone caves as well as fossils found here.

Geography

Mount Athabasca in Jasper National Park.

Major river systems originating in the park include the Athabasca and Smoky rivers (part of the Arctic Ocean basin).

Attractions

Fryatt Valley from the top of the head wall.

Fort Edmonton Park 2001

Fort Edmonton Park on the banks of the North Sask river in Edmonton Alberta.

Fort Edmonton Park is an attraction in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Named for the first enduring European post in the area of modern-day Edmonton, the park is the largest living history museum in Canada by area. It includes both original and rebuilt historical structures representing the history of Edmonton (including that of post-horse Aboriginals), and is staffed during the summer by costumed historical interpreters.

History

The history of Fort Edmonton Park’s conception goes back as far as 1915. In that year, the remains of the old fort next to the¬†Alberta Legislature Building¬†were torn down, amidst opposition from citizens who wished to see the old structures relocated so that they could be cherished for their heritage value. A renewed interest after the¬†Second World War¬†began the momentum that saw the park begin construction in 1969 under the direction of the Fort Edmonton Foundation.

The Foundation’s Master Plan of 1968 envisioned a park that would present a cross-section of the Edmonton area’s history from the distant geological past, to the areas that it currently embodies, and even an area that would prophesy Edmonton’s future. This original plan speculated that the completed park would be spread over ten phases. By 1987, however, it became clear that the park had evolved incompatibly with the ambitious 1968 plan, and the Master Plan was amended to focus instead on the four sections that had materialized to date.[3]

The fort was the first portion of the park to open in 1974, originally accessible directly by road. 1885 Street opened by the late 1970s, followed by 1905 Street in the early 1980s, and then 1920 Street by the beginning of the 1990s. A working steam train has transported visitors from the park’s entrance to the fort since 1977. Each street was opened as a work in progress, and the latest version of the park’s development plan calls for still more additions, especially to 1920 Street.[4]

Description

Costumed staff from various eras partake in a parade (as seen on 1905 Street).

As of 2008, Fort Edmonton Park is made up of four sections, each representing an era, all spread over 158 acres (0.639¬†km2).[5]¬†The park is located along the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River in southwestern Edmonton. The first era is represented by the fort of 1846, followed by 1885 Street, 1905 Street, and 1920 Street. Visitors may board a fully functional steam train at the park’s entrance which transports them across the length of the park to the fort, from which they proceed on foot and abstractly move forward through time by visiting all four eras.

Aside from the train, visitors may also ride horse-drawn carriages, streetcars, and automobiles in the appropriate eras. Rides on the train and streetcars are free with admission; however, rides on horse-drawn vehicles typically require a fee, and rides in the automobiles are at the discretion of the park staff who drive them.

From May long weekend through to Labour Day, and Sundays in September, visitors may also interact with costumed historical interpreters. These personnel utilize a variety of techniques to reveal the lifestyles and attitudes of the era that they represent. Additionally, throughout the year, public tours may be booked with non-costumed interpreters.
